How do I move IPOD itunes data and library to an external hard drive smoothly?
My entire itunes library including actual music files are stored on my ipod rather than my computer, is there a way to seamlessly transfer my ipod data to my new external had drive?
*I'm PC*|||Heh, that's dangerous - you can lose everything on your iPod that way...
Connect your iPod to your PC in Hard Drive mode, then copy the files to any directory on the external hard drive. Fire up iTunes and tell it to change the location of the stored files, and put in the external drive's directory. iTunes will pick up everything there and re-create your library from scratch. Use the iPod in manual mode so iTunes does not automatically strip the iPod of files.|||I think it’s crazy that Apple don’t allow this to happen in iTunes with a simple drag and drop, it’s probably down to DRM and legal stuff. But there is a work around which is useful particularly if the only copy of your library you have is on your iPod!
1. Open iTunes and click Edit %26gt; Preferences… then select the “Advanced” tab, within the Advanced tab select the “General” tab.
The location path under “iTunes Music folder location” is where all your music will be kept, this will need to be pointed to your external hard-drive.
Typically it is something like this C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\Music though it can be changed to whatever you like, so plug in your hard-drive and specify it accordingly.
Put a check in the “Keep iTunes Music folder organized” box.
2. Connect your iPod, once it appears under DEVICES in iTunes click on it to access the controls, on the Summary tab ensure there is a check in the “Enable disk use” box.
IMPORTANT: Make sure your iPod is "manually managed"! DO NOT SYNC!
3. Click on “My Computer” and locate the iPod device, double click to see its contents.
Typically you’ll see folders for “Calendars”, “Contacts” and “Notes” and nothing else as the music is hidden.
To locate the music we need to make it visible. In the explorer window click on Tools %26gt; Folder Options… then click on the View tab, under Files and Folders / Hidden files and folders make sure there is a check next to “Show hidden files and folders”.
You should now see a folder called “iPod_Control” within the folder is another directory called “Music” which contains all of the music files on your iPod, however these files are randomly named and randomly placed into directories called F00, F01, F02 etc. so there is no way of easily identifying specific songs or albums
Highlight all of the F## folders and right click selecting “Copy”. Now browse to the iTunes music folder we identified in step 1. Right click New %26gt; Folder and name it “_IPOD” open the directory and right click within it selecting “Paste”.
N.B The files will now start copying across, before doing this it might be worth checking you have sufficient space!
Once the files have copied into your new “_IPOD” folder, select them all and right click selecting “Properties” remove checks from both the “Read-only” and “Hidden” boxes and apply the changes to all files and folders.
Now go to iTunes, select File %26gt; Add Folder to Library… browse to the iPod music folder, as previously identified and select the folder we created called “_IPOD” and click “OK”. iTunes will now begin to add the files to it’s library whilst simultaneously renaming and filing them.
Done.|||If your Ipod plugs into your pc , then you can do it, if you have the cord and cd that came with you Ipod, have you enough USB ports? If not put themon you hard drive them to your external

How do you transfer movies that I have purchased on my iphone to my itunes library?
I ask this because i really want to update my iPhone but it won't sync my movies to my library. Whenever I click update it says that I shouldn't do so because I still have purchased items that have not been backed up. Please help!|||If all your files were purchased from iTunes store, use "Transfer Purchases" option to transfer. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329
If some of your songs were from other sources, you will need to utilize some iPhone transfer program to help you, like this handy program called Tansee iPhone Transfer
http://www.gutensoft.com/Utilities/Tanse鈥?/a>
Many of my friends are using it for its easy and safe transfer. The whole process goes as follows:
Firstly install this program on your computer. When you connect your iPhone to the computer, this program would instantly display all music and videos on your iPhone. All you need is to select what you wish to transfer and click "Copy" button. Done. All your selected files will be copied to your selceted folder on the computer safely. Now you can easily add those files to the iTunes library.
More importantly, this won't overwrite any original files on your iPhone.
Here is step-by-step guide on the whole process:

How should I dress while volunteering at the library?
Tomorrow I start my volunteer duties at the library. The YA supervisor told me to to dress nicely, but all my nice shirts are tie-dyed. What do I wear?|||Tie-dyed is fine for a library! With jeans and comfortable shoes. I have been to many libraries in my time but never one with a dress code. Wear whatever you would wear to school.
Be aware that the work you are asked to do might require some physical labor. They save that for volunteers! 8^) So dress comfortably.|||I agree with the others. A polo and dark wash jeans, or nice black pants will look good. You can get a few different colors in the polo or a button-down shirt.|||Wear a nice pair of dress pants and a nice shirt. Do you have to be a member of a library to join their free monthly activities?
Just wondering. We are taking advantage of some of the summer library activities and we have always gone with our local library, but there are some activities that my daughter wants to do at another library.Just wondering if we need to join to be apart of those things.I know I could call and ask,but this one starts this morning at 10 am and that is when the library opens as well. Thanks!|||Not that i know of. But be aware some library's have tickets to the local museums either free or a few $$$$ off.|||Not for our library. Some programs require that you register for the activity (when space is limited) but even then it doesn't matter if you have a library card to that particular library.|||I don't think so! If its a free, public activity, anyone can take part in it. Unless the activity is specifically "members only" which library activies rarely are, you should be fine. Have fun!|||no, you Just have to show up. You should check out there website (of the town/city's) to ge more info.
How do I get songs from my itunes library onto my ipod?
I know, this question has probably been asked about a hundred times by now, but I've tried to figure it out on my own and its just not working. I read the intstruction manual, just letting you know to avoid smart answers, it simply said to read the on screen instructions, however, there are no on screen instructions. Also, clicking file and then update songs does not work, nor does dragging the songs from the library to my ipod icon. So I need some help, I've transferred songs from itunes to my ipod on a different computer before but it doesn't seem to be working for me anymore. Any advice or methods on how to get the music on there would be appreciated.|||Make sure it is plugged in correctly. Pull down the file menu - then click "synch."|||When you plugin your iPod to your computer it will automatically run iTunes software which will then transfer the songs from your computer into your iPod automatically.|||Simple. Just plug in your ipod into the computer using the cable, and pull up itunes. On most computers, you will hear a sound when the computer recognizes the ipod. If you already have songs in your library, just click and drag them into the left-hand column where the name of your ipod and a picture of it should appear. If your ipod tab doesn't pop up, try waiting for a little bit. You can make sure it worked by: clicking on the ipod folder and see if the songs are present, or seeing the ipod tab blink for about a second. Well, not really simple.

What's the technologically most advanced library in the world or that you have visited?
Hi. I'm working on an assignment to look at how technology helps today's library work.
What's the technologically most advanced library in the world or the technologically most advanced library you have every visited yourself?
In what way was it advanced?
Thanks.|||i won't claim that it is the most advanced but the British Library must be up there - especially since it moved into its new building
it has what is probably the 2nd largest collection of books
it has started an online service
enables easy patent searches and other business information
also houses stamp and sound collections

What else should I put on my job application for a position at the public library?
Hi! I'm 16 years old and have never had a job before. I'm applying for a position at the Omaha Public Library.
I'm trying to think of things to put on my application to make them want to hire me. Here's what I have so far that I'm planning on including:
- I did a student internship at my youth church
-Knowledge of computers
-Can type 60 wpm
-Childcare volunteer at church
-then i'll probably include something about my 3.81 gpa/good grades
Another thing I do is play in the worship band at my church every Wednesday night. I'm thinking of putting that on the application somewhere, because it's technically volunteering, and it requires commitment to be on time for practice every week. Would that be a good idea to include that or would that be too random?
What else should I think about including?
Also, I wasn't planning on turning in an actual resume with my application, because I haven't had a real job yet, and the application has a section for experience/work record. Is that okay?|||I would certainly include your involvement with the worship band as well as your other activities. I would also include something about your reading habits and how much you like to read.
In this case I don't think a resume is required, but it is never a bad idea to include one.

What is it like working at the public library part-time nights and weekends?
Is there anyone who have worked 20 hours a week at the public library? Will this interfere with my regular 8am-5pm job? They are offering some evening and weekend hours. I am looking for something part-time to enhance my income. This job will pay $10.00 an hour unlike working in retail making $6 to $8 an hour. Please do not post fly by night jobs. I am not interested.|||A library can be a busy place, especially evenings and weekends. It can be interesting - and you'll be surprised at how much is involved in running a library. Depending on what they have you doing, you'll probably be on your feet a lot. But if you like to read, an advantage is you can see the new books when they come in.
It shouldn't interfere with your other job, as long as it's clear up front when you are available to work and when you aren't.
Good luck.|||I'd suggest that you take the job because you have a clear reason why it would work for you. After school is the busiest time in a library and often enough, it can be unpleasant. with mouthy teen upset about Myspace or a group of noisey handicapped adults and their leaders - the leaders almost always have too much attitude.
That clears up at 6, though, when they go home for dinner. I'm answering this at 9 and it was pretty quiet. A few parents brought home-schooled teens in to work on an assignment and so there were lots of books piled on tables. The WiFi went out - it does that often. People sneek food and drinks in the stacks more at night, and you'll have to enforce the no-eating policy. No big deal usually, though, mostly it's ignorance, people are so used to Barnes and Noble, I'm surprised no one's asked me for a free sample of a scone.
The hardest part for you MIGHT be working with a librarian that doesn't want you to talk to the patrons, give them directions, or even answer what's your favorite book. Some can be real jerks. Then, there's not a lot of advice I can give you, you can't go over their head. That's the way libraries have run for decades. If you are put in that sort of a situation, your only choice is to follow directions. Bummer, huh?

How do I get music from my itunes library to my ishuffle and itouch?
I know this is probably so easy, but I cannot figure it out. I want to put my 2 songs from my itunes library on my shuffle and my itouch. How do I do this? Also, is it possible to put the songs on both of those, or can I only put the songs on one of them? Thank you!|||Hi!
First of all make sure you have got the latest version of iTunes, then plug in your iPod Shuffle and iPod Touch. They should come up to the left of your iTunes window and then you click the Sync button.
It might be easier to do them one at a time also.|||If you added a DRM Free (unprotected song) or bought them from the itunes store, you can. The ipod shuffle is a little different than the regular ipods. You can drag the song on to the ipod in the source list. I believe if you click autofill and the ipod is on a different computer than you normally fill your ipod from, it will delete all the other music from that ipod and you will have to add all the music from your main computer again.
If you want to synchronize the iPod touch with the current iTunes library (all the songs that are in the library source), plug it in and click sync. If you want to just copy a couple of songs from that library, you will need to go in to the ipods settings and click "Manually Manage Music". This will allow you to drag and drop your own music. This turns off auto synchronization, which means that your playlists and songs will no longer be automatically transferred, and you will need to do it yourself. After clicking the manually manage music button, click apply, then go to the music source and drag and drop it in to the iPod.kayaks

How do you download the songs from your library onto your ipod?
I have an iPod classic, if that changes anything. But I have 9 songs in my library and I wanna know how to put them onto my iPod. Everyone is saying press "sync", but I have no clue where that is. And then people are saying go to file, and then it'll say "Sync _____'s iPod" but I don't see that.|||mark the songs that u want an then press sync at the bottom of the screen
What are those cards they have at the library that tell you what books they have and their number?
Remember how back in the day if you needed to find a book in the library, they'd have a cabinet full of index cards that would have the title, the author, and the number? What are those called?|||I believe that they are called 'catalog cards'.
Libraries used to have hardcover catalog books that would list the names, authors, location numbers, etc. of books published before 1986. After that, they went to the card system and called them catalog cards. The cards made it easier to add or remove books from the inventory.|||Ken is right about the term: they're called catalog cards.
Certain cards might be called the "author card," the "title card," the "subject card," or the "main entry card," but these terms would probably only be used by a catalog librarian.
Ken is mistaken, though, about how long they've been around: they've been around since the 19th century. Actually, 1986 is about the time that libraries started _closing_ their card catalogs and replacing them with online catalogs. If you're interested, LISwiki has a nice history of the card catalog.
The dictionary catalogs were always a bit of a problem: they were expensive to produce and were out-of-date before they even went to press; for this reason the dictionary catalogs were an option only for larger libraries with more important collections, and were primarily useful for scholars who could not search the card catalog personally because of geographic distance. |||what you are remembering is a card catalogue

How to sync ipod files with new iTunes library?
My old laptop with my iTunes and all my music died a couple weeks ago. I was able to save all my music files and have put them on my new laptop. I re-downloaded iTunes on my new computer and downloaded a couple songs. When I went to sync my ipod it said I couldn't sync my ipod (with all my music on it) to my "new" iTunes library. Does anyone now how I can remedy this without individually moving all my music files into iTunes?|||itune blocks this function since itune is the tool with one way to transfer files from itune to ipod. you must utilize other tools to achieve that. There're couple of tools for transferring the files between ipod and computer (for backup)depends on your demands, e.g transfer only songs/videos, transfer photos etc. You can have a look of below review site, hope it useful.bikebandit
How do I put the songs on my iPod to the library?
I downloaded a iTunes which was great and all except when I go to "sync" my iPod it wants to replace the songs in my library (there are none) with the songs on my iPod nano (which I have many many many songs). How can I put the songs already on my iPod into the library? Thanks.|||I believe you can only transfer purchased songs. My i-Pod will empty if I try to synch it to another computer.|||Under Edit, Preferences.... click the ipod tab and there should be an option to manually control your ipod as opposed to having it automatically sync. You should be able to do what you want after changing that setting.
How should I clean and disinfect baby books that are used or from the library?
I have some pre-owned baby books that look pretty good, but I don't like my son to touch them or put them in his mouth. I also like to go to the library, but I feel sorry for my 7 month old son when he reaches for the books and I can't give him one because they are not clean. I know the first that he will do is put them in his mouth. How can I clean and disinfect without damaging the books? And please don't say to buy new ones, becasue I simply cannot afford it. Thanks!|||I would suggest an antibacterial spray of some sort. If they are hard pages, use clorox brand. If they are regular pages, I would turn the book upside down and "fan" the pages and spray with Lysol or something like it. If you spray lightly and just spray multiple times the pages should stay new.|||How on earth do you expect your child to build up a resistance to infection if you keep sterilising everything?
|||I suggest disinfectant spray, spray it from a good distance. You can buy it cheap at the dollar store!|||Worry about keeping your food supply clean and safe, not your son's books. Less OCD = happier child, I promise. Library books are not a leading cause of childhood death and disability...|||Get over the "clean" thing. He will not spend his life in a bubble and he will get sick sometime. He's 7 months, not 7 weeks. You're going to have to accept that germs and dirt are part of life. If not now, when he starts to toddle.
I let my kid have library books and have from about 7 months and I don't clean them. In her life she has had 2 stomach bugs. One at 3 months, presumably caught from at the grocery shop and one she caught at day care. She isn't sickly at all.
Cleanliness may be next to Godliness, but really. You'd think the people reading the library books had plague or something!|||If the books have hard pages like most baby books do, you can use a disinfectant spray. I use the Clorox Sanitizing spray, which is a blue bottle Simply spray the book and pages (not too much!) then let it dry to disinfect. If the pages are not hard (which is unlikely in a baby book), then its much harder to disinfect, but try gently wiping with a disinfecting wipe.
Hope i helped|||I worked at a library for over a year and we would clean books with ammonia. (the outside covers only) As far as the pages in them go. Not too sure. I don't think you could wipe them down? If so, I'd think just a wet cloth or something?? I'm like you though, I hate my kids touching stuff like that too! Never know where they've been. Good luck! =)

My paper "QUANTITATIVE MEASUREMENT OF LIBRARY SERVICES: A REFLECTION OF SERVICES IN THE LIBRARY OF HIGHER EDUCATION CMMISSION, PAKISTAN" has been accepted in an international conference at UK. This same question has been asked and answered hundreds - if not thousands of times - already on YA.
"i have tried hitting the sync Button but nothing happened"
Because apple purposefully designed the iPod NOT to transfer songs from an iPod to a computer. Apple wants you to buy music from their store and knows that people would be less likely to do that if they could just copy songs from other people's iPods.
This has been a basic feature of iPods for years, yet iPod owners just don;t get it.
"i have no music in my library. Does that mean it will delete all my music?"
probably.
how did the music get onto that iPod to begin with? synced from another computer? Just copy the files from that computer.
If you downloaded directly to the iPod....you now have learned a lesson that that's pretty much something you should avoid doing.

How do I ditch my other iTunes library so I can start a new one on my new computer?
I just downloaded iTunes on my new computer and I pressed sinc and it asked me if I wanted to erase all the songs or transfer purchases but about 80 percent of the songs on my iPod are from cds, not from being bought on iTunes so that's a fail. It also said my iPod can ony have one iTunes library at a time. How do i ditch my old one?|||Hello, as long as your songs are still on your iPod, you can get them onto your new computer and iTunes easily.
The most convenient and secure way is to use an iPod-to-computer transfer program to help you, like this handy one called Tansee iPod Transfer
http://www.gutensoft.com/Utilities/Tanse鈥?/a>
Many of my friends are using it for its easy and safe transfer. The whole process goes as follows:
Firstly install this program on your computer. When you plug your iPod to the computer, this program will instantly display all songs and videos on the iPod.You simply select what you wish to transfer and click "Copy" button. Done. All your selected files will be copied to your computer safely. Now you can easily add those songs and videos to your iTunes library. See detailed guide.
More importantly, this won't overwrite any original files on your iPod. And all song names are preserved.
Here is step-by-step guide on the whole process:
http://gutensoft.com/Guide/How-to-transf鈥?/a>
Best luck!
You can also search more other ways at http://ask.com|||You can keep two iTunes accounts on two different computers under the same account name. You can have up to 5 authorized computers for one account. With that said, you can only sync your iPod to one library at a time. You can have completely different play lists on different computers, but whichever computer you sync to, that's the music that will end up on your iPod. If you want to keep certain music on your iPod but sync it with a different library you'll have to transfer the music from the iPod to the new library so that you can sync them.
If you're looking to load all new music onto your iPod just sync it with the music on the new computer's library.
Also, did you actually pick the option to transfer your purchased music from the iPod to the computer? Not sure if it picks out only bought music or not but you can always try it. By doing that, it won't delete the music from your iPod, it just puts the music into the new library.
If you can connect both computers to the internet at the same time, there's an option on iTunes to copy the library on one computer onto the next computer. You have to activate 'Home Sharing' on both but it works without deleting music on either computer.

Is it worth getting a premium membership to International Pool Tour for the video library access?
I'm still working on what to get my brother for Christmas. He is really into pool, and he's in a league. He is winning a lot of games.
People have made lots of good suggestions, and one is to get him instructional DVD's. Is it worth just getting him a two month membership (among other things) to International Pool Tour for their instructional DVD library? Thanks!|||I suggest giving your brother a book instead --%26gt; Byrne's Complete Book of Pool Shots: 350 Moves Every Player Should Know.
Robert Byrne is a hall-of-famer and a master teacher in the pool industry. The book contains 20 categories of pool shots (from tickys to double-kisses, and from jump shots to diamond systems). Some secret shots that only the pool professionals know are revealed in this book. This book is by far, the best book I've ever read about pool/billiard. No matter how good your brother is already, I guarantee his game will improve further. My game improved from level 1 to level 5 (10 being the highest) and I only have time to play once-a-week. It's definitely worth it!
Caveat: The book does not seem to be available locally. I had to made a special order at Powerbooks. I had a bad experience ordering it from Powerbooks though -- aside from the extra cost due to the special order, it took them more than the usual 3-4 weeks to get me the book. So, good luck if you decide to order this book.|||No, I am a pool player and that seems kinda lame. Its not actually a tangible gift that I think he would like best. Or be simple and get him a gift card to an online billiards store that way he can choose what ever he wanted. |||Do not give any money to the IPT under any circumstance. Giant crooks!

What makes a library inviting? what would you like to see when you walk into a library?
I'm just curious to know what people think...
When you walk into a public library what is the first thing you want to see?
What makes a library inviting?
What makes a library a good library? ie... lighting, signs, friendly staff?|||When I walk in a library I want to see somewhere comfortable and clean and lots of computers for research and catalog|||well-lit, clean floors, neat book cases, spacious entryway, helpful workers, easy-to-use computers and book-search software|||Friendly staff, clean areas, lots of table space, isolated areas with comfy couches, easy catalog system, easy to understand maps of the floor, ergonomic-friendly work stations|||Okay, when I walk into a library I like it to have an open area in the front reception. The placement of the check-out area needs to NOT impede the flow of people. The help desk needs to be centered in the space, allowing easy access for all patrons. I like as much natural light as possible. The children's area needs to be separate from the adult's. The children's area needs to have size appropriate furniture, as well as colorful walls. Murals of favorite book characters would be a bonus. A storytime stage where staff could read to the children would be great. The teen areas need to reflect the tastes of teenagers. Possibly having a listening station where they could listen to a CD while wearing headphones. The adult section could have an area structured after a family room, with chairs and end tables. The library would have computer access for kids as well as adults. I like it when the library holds special reading parties. A good library is one that promotes reading and has a staff that loves books!|||Having visited or worked in over 50 libraries, the most common obstacles I've seen are lots of steps, sometimes so many that they are over my head and I can't see past them. I've also walked into libraries with big lobbies and lots of benches but no people, or a beautiful lobby with a fountain and a bunch of give/take books in a mess on a single cart.
Few designers seem to take into account the practical operation of the library and it's apparent that the library staff had no say in the building's design. As soon as I notice that, I anticipate that the books will be hard to find, the computers stuffed in a dark corner, cardboard storage boxes cluttering staff work areas, and the organizational chart being either top-heavy or bottom-heavy, so it's clear the library is not integral to what happens in the city. More than half of the time, I'm right.

Is it possible to transfer my itunes library to another computer?
Its been bugging me since like christmas when i got a new laptop. And i'm also likely to get another new one soon, so can i transfer my entire library over easily with full apple support? As in no need to download some itunes rip online or anything like that. So can i just like connect my ipod and sync it? Or connect both computers with an ethernet or something?|||Yes, install iTunes on the new computer as normal. Now look for the iTunes folder in your music directory, there will be a file called "iTunes music library.XML" right click it open with a text pad. Now go to the original computer that you normally sync from.
On your regular " sync computer" open “iTunes Music Library.xml” with a text editor and search for the following text "%26lt;key%26gt;Library Persistent ID%26lt;/key%26gt;"; you should ideally find it at the top of the xml file. We are basically looking for the persistent id of your iTunes library. It appears to be the ID that tells iTunes; if you are syncing with regular computer or a different computer.
In the screen shot below for example the value 8B6C633F7DACB74B in between the %26lt;string%26gt; tags is the persistent id of the iTunes library on the "sync computer" . Copy this entry and close the file.
Now paste the key I to a new text file save it in to a portable drive and move it to the computer you like to add... Open your text file and the iTunes library file with a text document look for the "string" and change it with the one from your portable device... Close the file and start iTunes plug your iPod or iPhone and you will see they are accepted without formatting.
The next step is to copy your music library from the old computer to a portable device then plug the device to the new computer open iTunes , edit , preferences, (i think is the last tab) has your library location... Look under and put a check mark on something like " add playing media to library" ok it . Now drag all your media to the iTunes window... It may take a while but it will accept all ... And your last step is to authorize the computer thru iTunes for any purchases done over iTunes.....
Good luck!!!|||If you want to know how to Transferring itunes songs to a new computer, I think iTunes to iTunes Transfer would help you: http://cucusoft-itunes-to-itunes-transfe…

What revolution can rock and roll be tied to ex: industrial revolution, cultural revolution, scientific rev.?

What role did rock and roll play in the demise of Tin Pan Alley, and what did Tin Pan Alley do to fight back?
Rock %26amp; roll had NO EFFECT on Tin Pan Alley. What caused the demise of Tin Pan Alley was the rise of recorded music.
Tin Pan Alley was rows of streets of stores, which sold SHEET MUSIC in New York City. Most people played instruments during that time and would go to Tin Pan Alley to purchase sheet music. Each store would have musicians/sales people who played instruments, who would play the music (hence the tin pan) which customer would select, so they (the customers) would decide whether they wanted to purchase the sheets. Rock and roll music had no effect on this practice. However, when it became possible for the masses to purchase recordings, there was no need for the masses to learn to play instruments and worse no need for the masses to go to the store to purchase reams of sheet music....the handwriting was on the wall. In essence the early critics or rock and roll were right, though their focus was misplaced. Not rock and roll, but the recording of rock and roll, among other types of recordings, encouraged illiteracy and caused the demise of an entire industry. On the other hand, we have preserved some extraordinary performances so the original artist's performances could and can be heard by future generations.|||Tin Pan Allley was a term used for where they wrote Broadway music. Not popular music. And as far as I know Broadway is alive and well and living in NYC.|||This goes a long way back. In the days of Tin Pan Alley, all the songs, and hits of those days, where written by songwriters, like Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Ira Gershwin to name a few.
When Rock and Roll entered the music scene, most of the songs, were written by the performers themselves, leaving out those more established Song writers.
As to how, Tin Pan Alley song writers and Publishers fought back, I'm not sure they did, very well.
I would hazard a guess, that about one in ten people today, can even say they know about Tin Pan Alley. So I guess they lost the game.

Can someone honestly explain to me why''KISS'' is not in the rock and roll hall of fame.?
Kiss is not considered among the greatest bands of all time, as their musical style was not that much different from many mainstream bands of the 70's. What made Kiss memorable was their stage show, but that is not considered as making a contribution for music, ergo, no hall of fame.north carolina dmv

The full thing..... ummmmm I can't pay money...... thanks..Is there any website where I can read Grace Slick's Somebody To Love: A Rock-and-Roll memoir for free?
I read my sister's copy of that book, in paperback. I doubt that you'll find it free on-line to read, but you could surely locate it on ebay or at http://www.amazon.com for an inexpensive price -- Amazon usually has links to used copies of books. The paperback would not cost very much. It's a great period rock and roll memoir, well worth buying! I really enjoyed it!
Addendum: Actually, I just checked Amazon, and the book is available there, but the prices are outrageous!
I also tried ebay; it's available there, too; one offer is about $20 + shipping at a "Buy it now" price.

Here's the list of who's in. I think The Cars compete favorably. They had a unique sound and many hits.

yes, yes, yes, yes, unequivocally, yes! Great band, great songs! Why aren't they in there yet?
Yes they should, they were a good band, unique, influenced others. but there are many more bands and solo artist that should be there as well. here's my short list
KISS
Cheap Trick
MC5
The Stooges
Judas Priest
Iron Maiden
Motorhead
Iggy Pop
The New York DollsShould The Cars be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
Yes, they had enough edge and unique style that countered the typical American bands of their generation (Journey, Boston, etc.) so I think their role in the music world is worthy of an induction
They had good songs, but nothing groundbreaking or things that stand the test of time (unless you count songs used in commercials for retail stores)Should The Cars be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
Yes

Absolutely

well if you are speaking about actual Rock N Roll music from the 50s, not rock music, I would say it makes me want to dance allot. I usually put on music like this when im doing housework! lol Bill Hailey and his Comets are amazing! lol
brings back memories, and makes me want to party
Depends on the song.
But a lot of the time it makes me pissed off and feel like a rebel.
(:
CRAZINESS!!!
Adrenaline.
%26amp; that can mean a whole lot.
haha i feel cool, and a little bit boyish 8)
passion creativity inspiration calmness in some getting pumped up in others soothing and i cant stress relaxation enough. cuz thats a big one. im never relaxed for the most part but rock really does help me. specially alice in chains. and love.
Depends on the band %26amp; then depends on the song...many different feelings =]
However, lets take an example; "Hair Of The Dog" by Guns n' Roses evokes a kinda "F*CK YOU MOTHERF*CKER! ARE YOU TALKIN' TO MEEEEE?!" feeling!
Here, take a listen

Did rock and roll start in the south? rockabilly and blues?
Blues music has it's roots in the south. As it migrated north and spread, rock and roll evolved out of it. (The term "rock" is an old blues expression)
Rockabilly got its name from "Hillbilly Rock", kind of an attempt at the time to broaden country music's limited audience.Did rock and roll start in the south? rockabilly and blues?

Yeah man, heard of Big Mama Thornton? Rock'n'roll has those influences, as well as gospel. To say the truth, black people started the music with the work "rocking." Points for them.

Rockabilly= redneck ripoff!

Cleveland, Ohio
Some of the first Rock and Roll stars got their start in Country Music. I'm not sure if it STARTED in the South, but it was certainly influenced there.

Will there be a day when true rock and roll comes back.?
I'm talking about the good stuff like AC/DC, Sabbath, Metalica, The Beatles, The Stones, or Guns and Roses. I know that some of these bands are still around but I wanna know if there will ever be an end to this rap techno and mainstream shi*Will there be a day when true rock and roll comes back.?
heaven and hell (yeah, i know their not new), ace frehley (same) are still puting real good bluesy hard rock and metal out.
cagethe elephant, coheed and cambria, wolfmother, charm city devils, STEEL MUTHA F*CKING PANTHER, jet, buckcherry, the darkness (and the bands it became)
all those bands are putting out music like its still the 60s and 70s and 80s. hope i helped and i agree with you
some new stuff is good though, like kittie and theory of a deadman and puddle of mudd and others are new and good
...thats about it
EDIT: i forgot bigelf, the black crowes, witchcraft, the answer, danko jones, airbourne, order, priestess, early man, baroness
and no matter what anyone says kings of leon and the killers arent rock theyre shitty techno
You really think that the best thing that could happen to music would be everything sounding like it was made between 20 and 50 years ago? Out with the new, in with the old?
There are few modern acts significantly worse than AC/DC.
Specifically commenting on the last sentence - rap and electronic music (which I assume is what you mean by techno) were around before Metallica and Guns N' Roses. As for mainstream sh*t, what? If the underground is mainstream, then it won't be underground anymore. If you hate something purely because it's mainstream, you're not only a moron, you're also never going to be happy.
"all those bands are putting out music like its still the 60s and 70s and 80s". And that's the problem. Will there be a day when true rock and roll comes back.?
honestly the old guns n roses is probably never going to get back together and when i say old i mean these members:
Duff Mckagan
Slash
Izzy Stradlin
Steven Adler
Axl Rose
1 axl rose is full of himself and thinks he is Gods gift to the world, you know he is good but not that great plus he has a real bad temper
2 they dont get along anymore (when i say they i mean duff slash izzy vs. axl)
3 Steven Adler is still doing every drug known to man and wont stop which was why he got kicked out anyways.
thats just my take of guns n roses i pray that rock will come back and it kinda has not as many people like rap and pop since rock band and guitar hero came out
Classic rock style music will never return to the mainstream, only the underground. A new band I know of with a sound similar to Black Sabbath is Witchcraft. Check them out.
There is also some good mainstream rock like Radiohead, REM, and Beck (just my opinion), but the vast majority of it is terrible.
Rock will never die though. Look at classical music. It's hundreds of years old, and people still listen to it. Same deal with Jazz and oldies. Will there be a day when true rock and roll comes back.?
I agree that the rap techno is crap and i completly reject mainstream music now but i dont think it will ever come back. my favorite bands after 17 years sold out when they released there new albums this year and when your favorite band sells out, you know that GOOD music is lost.
That's why you make your own band, and ty to be famous and bring the sound back.
You don't just sit around wating for good stuff to happen, you have to make it happen.
Unless you're doing something about it, don't comlain.
i hope so! i'm like the only 13-year-old that listens to Elvis, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, ACDC, Green Day and all that other good stuff at my school! the stuff that stinks is good! it makes no sense! that's just my opinion though.
Well honestly who are you to say that someone else's music is not acceptable. You aren't. For another you have the ability to turn off the radio, and put in earphones, so stop complaining.
no way the stupid inner city monkeys are corrupting our youth with the stupid rap **** music just keeps getting worse and worse and i havent seen a good band since the ninety's
I hope so, because they don't play Alice Cooper's new stuff on the radio and the rest of the bands I like are dead.
There still IS true rock and roll. You just have to look carefully in the cracks of mainstream music.
I honestly hope so because we need them not the ones we have today Classics are ten times mejor =)

Do you think that Nirvana should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
They are one of my favorite bands and I think that they should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame becuase they introduced grunge rock to the world and made a widespread of the genre of music.Do you think that Nirvana should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
well, YEAH they should be! They were the best band of the 90's!!!
they didn't introduce grunge..they just brought it to
mainstream. i don't think they should because they didn't have enough material.Do you think that Nirvana should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
definitely. Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl are so talented and Nirvana changed grunge and many other genres of music with their own
There is no reason why they SHOULDN'T be.
No, they didn't invent grunge, but they made it what it was. They are one of the most influential artists now a days, and there's no reason why they shouldn't be in the hall of fame.Do you think that Nirvana should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
Thumbs down here we come. I'll call a spade a spade. No they should not. They sucked, they are the most overrated piece of junk out there.
No, simply because their album needs to be out for at least 20 or 25 years.
They did not introduce grunge, it had been around for a long time.(See Kings-X, Neil Young, and other Seattle bands....)
See you in 10 years, and then we will see if they stand the test of time.
Absolutely. No question in my mind that they will be inducted.
It's still too soon for them to be eligible.
they should but only after iron maiden.
iron maiden is one of the major forces of metal. their first album was in 1980 so they were around longer. i would be pissed if nirvana gets to the hall of fame first (no offense.)
when the do become eligible, i dont think they should. they did not stand the test of time or were around long enough. this is just my opinion....
yea they should be. they were a great influenence on many people, had a unique style, and basically changed rock music.
Oh god no! Not even a maybe!
Yes, they will be when they become eligible.
i think they should be, but they have to become eligible first
Its still to early for them to be inducted into the Rock and Rock of Fame
nirvan is way way overrated they suck. they didnt do anything new or creative
of course. even though they didn't invent grunge or alternative, they brought it to the mainstream.
Well, they had some of the best songs ever...
YES!
Yes. Nirvana led the grunge movement, taking inspiration from early punks like the Meat Puppets, the Sex Pistols, the Clash and the Ramones, and created something that pulled music out over the over-played hair band era. At the risk of sounding corny, Nirvana is the father of Alternative. All of the alternative legends can tip their collective hat to Kurt %26amp; Co. Calling Nirvana "overrated" is not appreciating the style and the artists brought to rock after 1989.

Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame?
There are a number of performers with many #1 hits not in the so called rock and roll Hall Of Fame. Their web sit does not explain the process, criteria or who does the voting or nominating. Does anybody know what the process is? Who actually runs the show? How to contact any of the people in charge of nominations?Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame?
the very concept of a rock and roll hall of fame is lame.Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame?
Jan Wenner (or however you spell his last name from Rolling Stone) runs the show and if he has a beef with an artist who belongs in the Hall of Shame, that person will never get in. It is a farce.

What song is the definition of rock and roll?
Jailhouse Rock- Elvis PresleyWhat song is the definition of rock and roll?
Hmm
Maybe We Will Rock You- Queen or if you don't really mean like actually define it with words I would say Stairway to Heaven Defines all Rock and Roll Stands for. But then again Rock and Roll cannot be defined by one single song it would have to be an entire artist because almost every song is really irrelevant to the actual Genre and I would say that Led Zeppelin Defines Rock and Roll.
Edit:
Wait my answer is Fortunate Son- Creedence Clearwater Revival
Afterlife by Avenged Sevenfold. It is one of their more Rock songs. It has got a catchy riff. Good lyrics. Good powerful drums. And it has got one of the SICKEST solo's ever made. It is what Rock and Roll is supposed to be.What song is the definition of rock and roll?

Zeppelin for sure.
Gotta go with Led Zep...
I do highly enjoy the Velvet Underground though"Rock And Roll" by the Velvet Underground or by Led Zeppelin?
Led Zeppelin for me
no comparison....led zepplin gets my vote
Led Zeppelin.
"Rock And Roll" by the Velvet Underground
I prefer The Velvet Underground's version. I was listening to Loaded a few days ago. Very good album.
Velvet Underground actually...
It's a great song, and Rock %26amp; Roll is my least favorite Led Zeppelin song, so it just barely loses out to Velvet Underground's Rock %26amp; Roll.
Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin's is so much better especially if you see the live shows, so much charisma

Zeppelin RULES.
Neither
Do you like the Rock and roll?
I'm a Rock fan but I'm seeing more Rap and Hip-pop Fans.Do you like the Rock and roll?
If I'm with friends and we're celebrating the end of something, we'll usually listen to rock and roll. But most of the time, it's Japanese music. I'm an anime fan just as you are a rock fan.
OMG I'm hearing a song aboutRock and Roll..
Yes I do...
Those were real artist and music...
People who were teenagers were very lucky T.TDo you like the Rock and roll?
Yeah, totally.
I can't stand today's rap and hip hop.
Plus, you can't rock out to rap and hip hop. If I'm frustrated or mad, I want to rock, not rap.
Yes. I just don't like what's being played on the radio. You are seeing more bubblegum rap fans. Bubblegum rap is not real rap and hip hop.Do you like the Rock and roll?

Since the 1950's what do you think was the greatest Rock And Roll single of all time?
Rock around the Clock was the original everpop of ROCK. When Elvis join in, Jailhouse Rock was the NEXT in line.Since the 1950's what do you think was the greatest Rock And Roll single of all time?
TOooooo many to pick just one. In the 50's,60,s the 45 single dominated the music scene so I sort of think of the hits back then having bigger impact on society, etc than a single these days.I like stuff like:
"Runaway" by Del Shannon
"Walk don't run" by the Ventures
"Revolution" by need I say The Beatles(plus about 20 other single that were brilliant)
"Somebody to Love" the Jefferson Airplane
"Johnny B Goode" by Chuck Berry
and about 500 others...It's impossible to pick one as the best.Laters!
Black Dog/Misty Mountain Hop - Led Zeppelin
The Kids Are Alright/A Legal Matter - The Who
Let There Be Rock/Problem Child - AC/DC
Caught By The Fuzz/Strange Ones - Supergrass
Stay With Me - FacesSince the 1950's what do you think was the greatest Rock And Roll single of all time?
For me, it has to be one with both sides popular. That'd make it Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever by the Beatles, for me. There have been SO many, though.
Stairway to Heaven by Led ZeppelinSince the 1950's what do you think was the greatest Rock And Roll single of all time?
anything by Elvis
Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who
satisfaction - rolling stones.

Rock and Roll summer camps that arent as expencive as camp jam?
I want to go to a rock n roll summer camp where you make your own band and do all the stuff that camp jam does, but camp jam is like $525 a week! So, anybody know any good camps that YOU MAKE A BAND IN around Cleveland, Ohio?Rock and Roll summer camps that arent as expencive as camp jam?
Well, considering most of the people who would go to one near Cleveland would be accessable through newspaper ads or bulletins, you would probably be best off putting together your own band. Almost TOTALLY free. I did it. Worked out fine, except we're short one singer... :(Rock and Roll summer camps that arent as expencive as camp jam?
I am looking for camps and camp jam is actually the cheapest I can find. As opposed to the Power Chord Acedemy that is $2000 per session! Well good luck with your band!

What is your opinion of The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame?
I agree with the popularity contest statements, there are some incredible acts that are not there, whereas there are some groups that were not very influential at all that are in there. But in terms of the actual museum, it is very interesting, lots of artifacts and history to be seen. My personal favorite piece is the Hendrix surround sound theater; it shows his live videos with speakers all around you. If you are debating on going or not, I would strongly recommend going if you are a fan of rock/metal...it is very interesting. What is your opinion of The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame?
In my opinion it sucks. There are so many legendary rock artists that have never been invited in such as Leon Russell and I believe The Who and others that I can't remember. Yet they let "current" bands in like, just for instance, Metallica. It is not fair and it is all on Jan (the Rolling Stone guy) and if he has a thing against someone, they do not get in. It needs to be totally revamped so that the real legendary artists are inducted meaning those that contributed in so very many ways over decades.

So, many more as well, anyways those were my opinions on which bands should be in the rock and roll hall of fame :)What is your opinion of The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame?
It's a joke!
How did Metallica beat most popular rockstars from the 1970's by being inducted last year?
And I agree with your comments about U2, just proves it is not truly a hall of fame. Just another Museum.
Ellen is right. Jan Wenner's tastes are the deciding factor. Although, the Who was inducted 19 years ago :-)
Rush, however, is not in it, and that is a joke. REM and no Rush???What is your opinion of The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame?
Well I cant take the Hall of Fame seriously. Rush,Iggy Pop, Motorhead and so many other influential bands are missing where as rap groups such as Run DMC are in there. its a Rock Hall Of Fame not a rap hall of fame
A nice place to visit but I wouldn't wanna live there.
I guess it's like everything else in life, you can please some of the people some of the time..........
its cool, not very famous to the public, but holds the greatest rock and roll bands of allll time.
It's a popularity contest

The Beatles
Led Zeppelin
The Rolling StonesWho is your best rock and roll band of all time?
Without a doubt, AEROSMITH !
Reasons: They all started the band when they were kids and have stuck it out to this very day with all the original members. That in itself is an unbelievable achievement. Also, Steven Tyler has kept his unique and amazingly powerful voice in top-notch form the whole time. To listen him sing and watch him preform blows you away. I have been a rock signer and musician all my life, and to sign like Steven Tyler for just one night is an impossibility. Plus, They Rock !! From; Classic hits to melodies that reach the stratosphere, they're truly in a class by themselves.

Why is rock and roll considered an amalgam of country and R&B?
I don't hear the country side of it.Why is rock and roll considered an amalgam of country and R%26amp;B?
When Chuck Berry came along and basically created rock (which the Beatles would completely re-invent not too long after), he actually did mix a hell of a lot of blues and country together. You can hear more country elements in Berry's guitar playing than you can in modern rock. Also, you can hear a lot of country elements in the Beatles' music but, unlike Chuck Berry, the Beatles also incorporated jazz chord progressions and really re-wrote how rock could be played and not all that long after Berry came along.
Anyway, rock is basically a mix of three different genres: blues, jazz and country. Of course, blues is the strongest influence and those three genres are not always the only influences. And, nowadays, you rarely ever hear a real country influence in rock. Jackyl was probably one of the last few bands (I believe they got their start in the early 90's) to do a real country-sounding song with "Secret of the Bottle." Cinderella, known as an 80's hair band, also did a country tune in 1990 called "One for Rock and Roll." And, of course, Bon Jovi has done two 'country' tunes recently but, in all honesty, they sound more like rock when compared to real country and the country-style songs by artists such as the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Badfinger, Cinderella, Jackyl, etc.
Also, do keep in mind that many country artists (those who play actual country music) were also influence by rock. For instance, Chet Atkins--who influenced the Beatles and came out before them--was actually influenced by the Beatles as well. Then, there was also Buck Owens who was a fan of rock and even covered Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." Modern country actually has Brad Paisley (who, by the way, is one hell of a guitarist) who has many non-country influences including Eddie Van Halen, Eric Johnson and the Beatles (he also has many jazz and blues influences as well and, obviously, many country influences). Anyway, in reality, all genres of music are more closely related than many people seem to realize.

Early rock bands had a lot of blues influence (Janis Joplin, Deep Pruple, The Who.)

Puh. Blues, yes.Why is rock and roll considered an amalgam of country and R%26amp;B?
Most early Rock and Roll was steeped in rockabilly. Some swing. Some REAL country music. Not this watered down rock and roll wannabees you hear today. Elvis gets WAY too much credit for his contributions to rock. Elvis was Elvis. Not taking anything away from that. However, he didnt fuse black and white music. If anything, he drew a line that black musicians of the era could not cross. He got his music played in places where nobody even thought of listening to the black artists of the time. Beyond that, Elvis owes his career to the likes of Carl Perkins. Even Elvis would tell you that if he could.
The music was a logical progression in many ways. Gary U.S. Bonds, Little Richard, Smokey Robinson, The Five Satins, The Everly Brothers, Bo Diddley, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline...a vast myriad of great artists who blended gospel music, rockabilly, early soul and country music are what brought us to what we call rock and roll.
Back to that line I mentioned. R%26amp;B moved to Hittsville in Detroit. The early Motown bands, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Primes and the Primettes (Temptations and Supremes) were really the forerunners of soul. They along with people like Mary Wells, The Ronnettes, The Isely Brothers, The O'Jays...that was making an entirely different line of music that was as important and exciting as any of the "white" music that came out of the era.
Bands like the Beatles, Stones, Dave Clark 5, Herman's Hermits (who actually were second to the Beatles with rock hits in that era,) The Yardbirds (with Clapton, Page and Beck) modified the blues music, added a little acid to it and became Cream, Buffalo Springfield, The Dead, The Airplane, Quicksilver...most of the San Francisco bands grew out of those early Sun artists and the others I mentioned.
I got to see most of this happen. I'm no expert. I'm not saying other people wont disagree. But all I know is that as a young musician in the early 60's who grew up with the likes of Les Paul, Django Reinhard, Louis Armstrong and others from the "Big Band" era...(one of my uncles played with Tommy Dorsey)...I feel I have a pretty good perspective on it.
Anyway, great question really. You should get some interesting answers!!!
Because the people who thought of that were idiots.
